EMOTIONAL SUPPORT PUBLIC ACCESS TEST FROM US-SAR
Emotional Support Animal Requirements
How can my animal qualify to be an emotional support animal?
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Air Carrier Access Act, and Fair Housing Act, your Emotional Support Animal (ESA) does NOT need any specific training, but only needs to be manageable in public and controlled by you, its disabled handler. This is because the very presence of the animal is what ameliorates the negative symptoms associated with a person’s emotional or psychological disability.
Note: US-SAR acknowledges that some ESAs are not “on-leash” and are either carried with or without a cage, crate, or other housing. In this case, the ESA does NOT need to meet the following “on leash” criteria, except that it should show no aggression toward humans or other animals when unprovoked.
If your ESA is a dog “on leash”, it should be able to:
- Walk beside you without straining against the leash
- Sit on command
- Come when called
- Lie down on command
- Show no aggression toward humans or other animals when unprovoked
